When I first started, I thought I would only have to deal with people if there was a problem and that I didn’t have to establish relationships with people.
But I learned that people won’t come to you with a problem if you haven’t already connected with them. Establishing boundaries with your residents will be one of the hardest parts of the job. If you don’t, it’s going to be so easy for residents to be able to manipulate you and gain control in a situation. It’s important to be friendly with residents, but there’s a very fine line with that.
Being an RA feels like being in a fishbowl. Your residents and the residence directors are going to be watching you all the time, and anything you say and do is always going to be under scrutiny.
