Single girls wanting babies is all the rage in American pop culture now. Thanks to unwed mothers like Madonna, adoptive moms like Rosie O’Donnell, or wannabe moms like everybody I seem to know, maternity doesn’t have to go hand in hand with marriage.

Within the first 50 pages, we meet Ellen’s sister and the Pickle and her dad; and Ellen’s every word, her every heartfelt outpouring of love brings tears to our eyes. The whole idea of Big Bird as the perfect dad warm, friendly, great with kids is great, very original. Ellen is clearly ready to be a mom in some respects, sharing quiet moments with her niece, showing a willingness to understand every feeling the little girl could have that the child can barely articulate herself.

However, when it comes to the part about the man, Ellen is in love with a troubled Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist whose life unraveled when his young son died of leukemia at the age of seven. His marriage crumbled soon after, then his career, and he has declared that he will never have children again.

The complications of loving someone who doesn’t see in his life something that you see so clearly in yours leads Ellen to make some tough decisions. Her journey from sperm donor ads to Mommy groups is heart wrenching and true-to-life. And now that Zigman in real life is expecting a child with a longtime boyfriend, it is my hope that her next book takes the process even further.

DATING BIG BIRD. By Laura Zigman. Dial, $ The narrator of Laura Zigman’s second novel, Dating Big Bird, wants to have a baby.

Thirty-five-year-old Ellen Franck lives the New York dream. The marketing genius behind a prestigious fashion designer, she rubs shoulders with the rich and famous, has a great apartment and a hectic social life—but no baby. This quintessential New York story where yet another beautiful, talented women trawls a sea of potential fathers and comes up empty nicely ponders the question of whether women, despite feminist strides, still need men to complete them.

It glosses over other social questions that lie at its center, however: What makes it so hard for urbanite, professional women to find viable partners? The talented Bennett fuels her fiction with secrets—first in her lauded debut, The Mothers , and now in the assured and magnetic story of the Vignes sisters, light-skinned women parked on opposite sides of the color line.

The novel opens 14 years later as Desiree, fleeing a violent marriage in D. Marrying a dark man and dragging his blueblack child all over town was one step too far. Stella, ensconced in white society, is shedding her fur coat. Jude, so black that strangers routinely stare, is unrecognizable to her aunt. All this is expertly paced, unfurling before the book is half finished; a reader can guess what is coming.

Bennett is deeply engaged in the unknowability of other people and the scourge of colorism. The scene in which Stella adopts her white persona is a tour de force of doubling and confusion.

Judy never intended to start wearing the dog. Teddy, now a teenager, treats her with some combination of mortification and indifference. Her best friend is dying. On top of it all, she has a painfully ironic job writing articles for a self-help website—a poor fit for someone seemingly incapable of helping herself. Tapping into the insecurities and anxieties that most of us keep under wraps, and with a voice that is at once gleefully irreverent and genuinely touching, Laura Zigman has crafted a new classic for anyone taking fumbling steps toward happiness.

Laura Zigman is an emotional sharp-shooter—she is able to home in on the most tender, revealing, exquisitely painful aspects of our relationships with others and with ourselves. And somehow she manages to come out the other end with hope, having found what was most meaningful after all. If I could, I would. Separation Anxiety is wickedly funny, heartrending, poignantly wise, and hopeful. It’s laced with moments of self-doubt and marital mayhem, but also the many small daily acts of mercy and heroism that love inspires, though we too often overlook them.

The main character, Judy, is hilariously offbeat, yet very easy to identify with, honest and thoughtful, and I loved spending time with her.
