By Carly Stern For Dailymail. We’re not sure what J. Rowling would say about this one — the Sorting Hat wasn’t designed for muggles, after all — but a new scientific study has tried to determine which Hogwarts house best fits the temperaments of every US state. Conducted by Time magazine and social scientists from Cambridge University, the study used a handy little Sorting Hat quiz to sort readers into one of the four houses at Harry Potter’s school: Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin.
They then figured out which house was the most common in each state, plotting it all out on a fascinating map. Welcome to Hogwarts! Time magazine teamed up with social scientists at Cambridge University for a scientific Sorting Hat quiz that determines personality traits. The study was drawn up in honor of Harry Potter’s 20th anniversary last month, and as of the map’s initial posting, over , had taken the quiz.
That quiz — which is still available to take online — used Rowling’s descriptions of each of the houses and the characters in them to influence its questions. Readers were asked how much they agreed or disagreed with 21 statements like, ‘I wouldn’t want people to treat me as though I were superior to them,’ ‘If there is an important reason to face something that scares me, I will face it,’ and ‘When working, I often set ambitious goals for myself.
More statements included, ‘I see myself as critical, quarrelsome,’ ‘I have used flattery to get my way,’ ‘I see myself as sympathetic, warm,’ and ‘I do only the minimum amount of work needed to get by. After the internet once again had to cancel J. Rowling for problematic comments, Twitter users are calling for the end of identifying by Hogwarts House. Author J. Rowling may have created a beloved multimillion dollar franchise about the wizarding world, but she continues to tarnish the series with her bad tweets. Most recently, she posted another string of transphobic tweets — and during Pride month, too.
We’ve been down this road time and time again, as Twitter users reckon with their childhood hero being repeatedly problematic.
Dating is weird, because the two of you are either going to be great to figure out your respective Hogwarts houses, and then plan accordingly.
They’re big characters and they feel things deeply, from undying love to supreme annoyance. Gryffindors are pretty ravenclaw creatures, which says spending time with them feel relaxed and easy. So expect impromptu holidays, and also a lot of dating from all the dumb shit they’ll definitely do. If there’s one relationship you can say for a Gryffindor, it’s that they always mean well and love big. It doesn’t get them wise, but it says make them easy to forgive. They’re natural leaders, and they like getting dating done, which means you can let them run the show and reap the benefits.
They’re used to taking the reins and getting their way, which can lead to some dating if say, you disagree on where to go for drinks or whose family to spend the holidays with. They don’t always make the most perfect choices, so you end up reminding them to step back and let it go a lot. Great for when their friend’s being a dick to you, less great when you’re trying to tell them nicely that their socks don’t get.
Sometimes those mischievous glances mean let’s get it on, sometimes they mean let’s get something reckless and potentially illegal. Posted on Kind 25, , GMT. Chelsey Pippin. Kind Staff, UK.
Hello everyone! So, the past few days I’ve been helping my friend Gryffingirl Who else? And today I was thinking
Which Hogwarts House would contain the best dating material? And it gets me super frustrated because each house has their perks!! user.
You would also be assigned to a house, which, much like zodiac signs, would tell you pretty much everything you need to know about a person right off the bat Scorpios and Slytherins tend to invite similar amounts of scorn, sorry, bbs. Well, spoiler alert: The four houses actually correspond reeeaaally well with the four elements in astrology. Okay, Gryffindor is percent the house for fire signs. But more important, Gryffindor witches and wizards are known for their determination, bravery, and boldness which sometimes hinges on being reckless.
Of all the signs in the zodiac, Aries, Leo, and Sag have the most natural talent, even if they take a while to grow into it —take Neville, for example, who goes through the ultimate glow-up in the books and IRL. Fire signs also tend to have the best intentions and are willing to forgive and forget, even if they can get over-competitive or hotheaded every now and then. Harry Potter himself is a fire sign put your paws up, Leos! Fire signs. But the Hufflepuff slander ends today!
Slytherins are characterized by their ambition , cunning , resourcefulness and a strong sense of loyalty to a select few. Biased, I tell you. Hufflepuffs are known for their commitment to hard work , dedication , sense of fair play and loyalty. But have you seen a badger in real life? They can be vicious when the situation calls for it…they just prefer not to.
Right off the bat, we have a shared sense of loyalty in a SlytherPuff relationship.

The Boy Who Lived has once again made the internet livid by simply celebrating the 20th anniversary of his introduction to the world in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. But among the event’s celebrations and dedications, it was wholly unsurprising that the anniversary dredged up a perpetually argumentative concept that has ruined many a friendship: Hogwarts houses. Nobody who has reached consciousness in post-’90s pop culture has been able to avoid that pressing question we’ve all heard: “What house are you in?
However, as the years have passed and J. Rowling has expanded the wizarding world through further writing and her tweeting purview, the four houses of Hogwarts have morphed into something far more loaded than their initial introductions in the Sorting Hat’s song of September. For better or worse, the words Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw have become a combination of stereotype, hyperbole, and brutal peer-to-peer judgment — and their names alone are, in a word, triggering.
Such a phenomenon reared its head on the eve of HarryPotter20, as allegiances were declared and battle lines were tweeted. And so, here at EW, a portion of us fairly devoted Harry Potter fans have decided to clear up the murkiest of misconceptions that have come to plague the houses with which we so closely identify.
There is only one pertinent word worth using when describing a Slytherin: ambitious. Yes, Voldemort was a Slytherin. Yes, so was almost every other evil character. Yes, the parallel between Nazis and Death Eaters is problematic.
